Welcome To My Blog!

My name is Petr Zemek and I am a software developer and researcher from Brno, Czech Republic. I am currently finishing my Ph.D. studies at the Faculty of Information Technology, Brno University of Technology (FIT BUT). Since I will loose access rights to my student web page after I receive my Ph.D., I have decided to create a brand new website and blog that I can use after my studies are done. In this post, I would like to briefly introduce you to the new website and blog.

The website is built upon WordPress. I have used a customized version of the tdSimple theme, which I like very much. I am hosting the site on a private VPS, which runs Debian Wheezy (a stable version of the popular Linux distribution). The reason why I have chosen to use a VPS over a shared hosting is twofold. First, I want to administrate my own sites by myself and be able to install anything I need. Secondly, apart from WordPress, I also run many other services that I use, like Tracks and Radicale.

From the navigation menu, you can see all the main parts of the website. On the About Me page, you can read some general information about me. The page contains my history, professional career, education, a summary of research and technical skills, and many other pieces of information. Next, there are two blogs, the English one and the Czech one, mentioned later in this post. The Projects page lists the open-source projects I have created, maintained, and contributed to. Next, on the Publications page, you can see all the scientific papers, conference contributions, and online articles that I have written. As I am fond of giving talks, you can see and download materials from the talks that I gave given on the Talks page. There are also video and audio records from some of the talks. Finally, as its name suggests, the Websites page lists the websites that I have created.

In this blog, I will write about programming languages and practices, software development, Linux, and other rather technical stuff. If you understand Czech, be sure to also check out my Czech blog about my studies, programming, productivity, Linux, and other things that I like to write about. I have started that blog during my studies at FIT BUT, and I have been writing posts in it since August 2008. Of course, the blog was originally hosted on my student website, but since I am going to finish my studies, I needed to relocate it.

I hope you will enjoy my posts and I am looking forward to our discussions in the comments section!
